Twice in life, I have worked for managers who really got me. They knew exactly how to get me to give my absolute best: pushing me; challenging me; and they had my back. I felt it. They trusted me. And I loved going to work. I developed an amazing work ethic and I was loving life. I belonged–I was in 110%.
And I am not the easiest of people to work with. I expect a lot (and give a lot). I call a spade a shovel, to get results (with positive intention). You want me on your side.
I spent years carrying two conflicting beliefs: I am a fearfully and wonderfully made daughter of the great high king – and I am horrible. They don’t fit together do they? It took me years to learn to love myself. And even longer to like myself.
Life has been tough at times-and work hasn't always been a fairy tale story with a happy ending. I have worked for managers who never got me at all, they didn’t understand me. In one job, when I left, I had senior staff who were not aware that I had lost everything in a house fire while I was there.
Seriously? A major life event and not even aware. What sort of work place is that?
So, I have worked for the best, where I was sorry to leave and I have walked out of jobs, feeling broken, because I could not carry on another day. I have felt valued and appreciated, proud of what I do. Being the person I was created to be. And I have felt shut down, used and bullied.
So, when we talk about thriving at work – I get it. I understand what it feels like when you get it right and when it all goes wrong. What amazes me is how simple and cheap the solutions can be. I now have a range of the best tools. I understand people more deeply-and I know what is possible.
I love how my previous roles and skills allow me to select the latest neuroscience and evidence based practice, that is so exciting it sometimes keeps me awake at night–work like mBraining showing we have multiple brains-who would have thought. And I love sharing that.
I believe Success is in people: you and your staff. That’s worth finding out more about–isn’t it? That is a game changer.
